Summer is made for road trips, vacations, sports, camps, pool days, and spontaneous plans. But if you or your child is in orthodontic treatment, a little preparation can make the difference between a smooth summer and an unexpected orthodontic setback.

At Creekside Orthodontics in Vacaville, CA, we want every patient to enjoy summer without losing progress on their smile. Whether you wear braces, clear aligners, rubber bands, or a retainer, this guide will help you stay comfortable, confident, and treatment-ready wherever the season takes you.

Why Summer Requires a Different Orthodontic Game Plan

During the school year, routines tend to be more predictable. Summer is different. Meals happen on the go, bags get packed in a hurry, sleep schedules shift, and patients may be away from home for days or weeks at a time.

For braces patients, this can mean more exposure to sticky snacks, sports injuries, or broken brackets. For aligner patients, summer travel increases the chances of misplaced trays, inconsistent wear, or forgetting to switch to the next set on time.

The goal is not to make summer feel restrictive. It is to help you build a simple plan so your orthodontic treatment continues moving forward while you enjoy everything summer has to offer.

Pack a “Smile-Safe” Travel Kit

Before any trip, build a small orthodontic kit that can fit into a backpack, purse, carry-on, or sports bag. You do not need anything fancy — just the essentials that help you handle meals, discomfort, and minor issues away from home.

For braces, your kit should include a travel toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, floss threaders or orthodontic flossers, orthodontic wax, a small mirror, lip balm, and extra rubber bands if they have been prescribed. If you are traveling for more than a few days, it is also smart to bring a small bottle of mouth rinse and any supplies you use at home to clean around brackets and wires.

For aligners, pack your current trays, your aligner case, a travel toothbrush, toothpaste, cleaning tablets or aligner cleaner, and your next set of trays if you are scheduled to switch while away. Never pack aligners loose in a bag or wrap them in a napkin during meals. The safest place for aligners when they are not in your mouth is always the case.

Choose Braces-Safe Summer Snacks

Summer foods can be fun, but not all of them are friendly to braces. Hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy foods can loosen brackets, bend wires, or create discomfort.

Instead of popcorn, hard pretzels, taffy, caramel, ice, or corn on the cob, choose softer options like yogurt, smoothies, cheese sticks, soft fruit, pasta salad, soft sandwiches, applesauce, scrambled eggs, or seedless watermelon cut into small pieces. If you are heading to a barbecue, cut foods into smaller bites rather than biting directly into tougher items.

The American Association of Orthodontists offers helpful guidance on what to eat and what to avoid with braces, especially when you are out of your normal routine.

If you wear clear aligners, you have more flexibility because aligners come out before eating. Just remember to brush or rinse before putting them back in. Putting aligners over food particles or sugary residue can increase the risk of plaque buildup and odors.

Protect Your Smile During Summer Sports

Summer is a popular time for sports, camps, and outdoor activities. Whether it is soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, skateboarding, or water sports, mouth protection matters.

If you wear braces, a regular boil-and-bite mouthguard may not fit correctly over brackets and wires. Orthodontic mouthguards are designed to fit more comfortably around appliances while helping protect your lips, cheeks, teeth, and braces.

The American Dental Association recommends properly fitted mouthguards for sports and recreational activities that carry a risk of dental injury. The AAO also notes that patients in braces or orthodontic treatment should talk with their orthodontist about the right type of mouthguard.

At Creekside, we recommend Shock Doctor mouthguards, including braces-fit styles designed for athletes in orthodontic treatment, which can be purchased directly from Shock Doctor or through retailers like Target, Walmart, DICK’S Sporting Goods, and Amazon.

Know What to Do If Something Breaks

True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but minor issues can happen during summer travel. Knowing what to do can help you stay calm until you can reach our office.

If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax if it is irritating the cheek or lip. If a wire is poking, wax can also help protect the area temporarily. If you are dealing with soreness after an adjustment or aligner switch, soft foods and a warm saltwater rinse can help soothe tenderness.

If an aligner is lost or broken, call our office before deciding what to do next. Depending on where you are in your treatment, we may advise you to wear your previous tray, move to the next tray, or come in for a replacement plan.

Stay Consistent With Rubber Bands and Aligner Wear

Summer freedom can make it easy to forget the habits that keep treatment on schedule. Rubber bands and aligners only work when worn as directed.

If you have rubber bands, keep extras in more than one place: your travel kit, sports bag, car, and suitcase. If you wear clear aligners, aim for the wear time recommended by your orthodontist and build tray changes into your calendar or phone reminders.

Clear aligners are designed to move teeth gradually, but skipping wear time can slow progress. Learn more about aligner treatment from the American Association of Orthodontists or visit our Braces & Clear Aligners page.

Schedule Before You Travel

Before a long trip, summer camp, or busy sports season, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment so we can check your braces, aligners, attachments, rubber band wear, or retainers. A quick visit can help prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems while you are away.

At Creekside Orthodontics, we have served Vacaville families for more than 30 years with personalized orthodontic care and modern treatment options. Our goal is to help every patient enjoy a healthy, confident smile without missing out on life’s best moments.

This summer, pack your sunscreen, your water bottle, and your smile-safe kit — then enjoy the season knowing your orthodontic treatment is still on track.
