As the hills around Vacaville turn green and the almond blossoms begin to bloom, the “spring cleaning” fever starts to set in. While you’re busy refreshing your home and garden, there’s one other area that deserves a deep clean: your orthodontic routine.
At Creekside Orthodontics, we know that a straight smile is only as beautiful as it is healthy. Whether you’re wearing traditional braces or clear aligners, your orthodontic appliances require a specialized “maintenance schedule” to prevent plaque buildup, staining, and gum inflammation.
This month, we’re sharing our professional tips on how to “spring clean” your smile, the must-have tools for your kit, and how to keep your treatment sparkling through the season.
Why a “Spring Clean” Matters
When you have braces or aligners, your mouth has many more “nooks and crannies” than usual. Brackets and wires act as magnets for food particles, and aligners can trap bacteria against your teeth if not cleaned properly. If neglected, this can lead to “white spots” (decalcification), gingivitis, or even delays in your treatment time.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, maintaining excellent oral hygiene is the #1 factor in a successful orthodontic outcome. At Creekside, we want your “reveal day” to be perfect, which means keeping your enamel pristine from day one.
The Braces Toolkit: Upgrading Your Routine
If you have traditional braces, a standard toothbrush often isn’t enough. It’s time to upgrade your “cleaning closet” with these essential tools:
1. The Water Flosser (Waterpik)
Traditional flossing with a threader is effective, but it can be time-consuming. A water flosser uses a pressurized stream of water to blast away debris from behind wires and under the gumline.
- Pro Tip: Use lukewarm water if you have sensitive teeth, and always aim the tip at a 90-degree angle to the tooth.
2. Interdental Brushes (Proxabrush)
Think of these as tiny “pine tree” brushes. They are perfect for sliding underneath the archwire to scrub the sides of your brackets where a normal toothbrush can’t reach. They are portable and great for a quick clean-up after lunch at the Nut Tree!
3. Electric Toothbrushes with Ortho Heads
Many electric toothbrushes now offer specific “ortho” brush heads with shorter bristles in the center to accommodate brackets. The high-frequency vibrations are far more effective at breaking up biofilm than manual brushing alone.
Aligner Care: Keeping “Clear” Clear
For our Invisalign® and Spark Aligner patients, the challenge isn’t food trapped in wires—it’s keeping the trays transparent and odor-free.
The Golden Rules of Aligner Hygiene:
- The “Rinse & Brush” Rule: Never put your aligners back in after eating without brushing your teeth first. If you’re out at a Vacaville restaurant and can’t brush, at least rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.
- Avoid “Soaking Sins”: Never use hot water to clean your aligners, as it can warp the medical-grade plastic. Likewise, avoid colored mouthwashes, which can stain the trays.
- Use Cleaning Crystals or Gentle Soap: Use specialized cleaning crystals or a clear, mild toothpaste to scrub your trays daily. Avoid abrasive toothpastes that can create microscopic scratches, making the aligners look “cloudy.”
The Daily Hygiene “Spring Routine”
To keep your smile in top shape, Dr. Anderson recommends this 3-step daily ritual:
- Brush After Every Meal: Not just morning and night. Carrying a travel toothbrush is the best way to prevent sugar and acid from sitting against your teeth all day.
- Floss Once a Day (Minimum): Use your water flosser or a floss threader before bed to ensure your gum tissue stays firm and pink.
- The “Mirror Check”: After cleaning, take a close look in the mirror. Do your brackets look shiny? Is the gumline clear of any white, fuzzy buildup? If so, you’re doing it right!
Professional Cleaning: Don’t Skip the Dentist!
While Dr. Anderson and the team at Creekside Orthodontics are experts at moving your teeth, you still need your general dentist to keep them clean. We recommend that our orthodontic patients in Vacaville continue their routine cleanings every 6 months (or even every 4 months for those prone to heavy buildup).
Research highlights that professional cleanings during braces help prevent “puffy gums” (gingival hyperplasia), which can actually slow down tooth movement.
